1846 The Gas Company was formed.

The original Gasworks were built in South Road, Bishop Auckland. These would have been simple hand charged horizontal retorts.

1877 the Bishop Auckland District Gas Co was formed by Special Act of Parliament.

Gasworks built in Fylands Drive/Watling Road, Bishop Auckland.

By 1893 the South Road gasworks had closed, being replaced by the Fylands Bridge Gasworks.

1939 regular gas making ceased. The horizontal retorts were retained with a supply of coke oven gas from both Brancepeth and Evenwood

1949 Vested in Northern Gas Board
