BERNHARD GODFREY ERMEN was born in Manchester on 25th July 1869.
His early education was received privately, after which he spent four years at the Gymnasium at Worms, Germany. This was followed by study at the Manchester Grammar School and the School of Commerce, Antwerp, and during his apprenticeship he attended the evening courses at the Manchester Technical School.
In 1888 he began a three years' apprenticeship at the Bridgewater Mills, Pendlebury, after which he acted as inside manager for nine years.
In 1900 be was appointed chief engineer to the English Sewing Cotton Co., Manchester, being responsible for the whole of the power plants and other machinery in connexion with this combination of mills.
This position he held until his death, which took place in Manchester on 20th July 1917, in his forty-eighth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1907.
