Atholl Blair, C.B.E., who died on 12th August 1957 at the age of 71, and who was for many years one of the leaders of shipbuilding and engineering in Belfast, was elected a Member of this Institution in 1921. He was also a Member of the Institution of Naval Architects, and of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders of Scotland. In 1922-23 he served as President of the Belfast Association of Engineers.
He received his education at George Watson's College, Edinburgh, and at St. Andrew's College, Dublin; he served his apprenticeship with Harland and Wolff, Ltd., Belfast.
In 1911-12 he represented Harland and Wolff on the first voyage of R.M.S. Olympic, and subsequently worked as a draughtsman. He then became Assistant Manager in the Engine Works, and in 1933 succeeded to the position of Manager. He served on the board of the company from 1933 until his retirement in 1952.
Mr. Blair was appointed an M.B.E. in 1918 and was promoted to C.B.E. in 1949 in recognition of his services to the shipbuilding and engineering industry.
