Mr A. W. Berry, who died on the 19th March at the age of 61, was educated at Repton School and at Faraday House Electrical Engineering College. He served an apprenticeship with C. A. Parsons and Co. Ltd, and with the Societe Alsacienne de Constructions Mechaniques, Belfort.
From 1923 to 1933 he was with the British Electric Transformer Co. Ltd, and he then joined the staff of Crompton Parkinson Ltd, where he was engineering plant Sales Manager until his appointment in 1943 as Director of the British Engineers' Association. During the 1939-45 war he served as an Honorary Advisor to the Directorate of Industrial Electrical Equipment.
He was largely responsible for the inception in 1947 of ORGALIME (Organisme de Liaison des Industries Metalliques Europeennes), and was Chairman of the Executive Committee.
He travelled widely on behalf of his industry and was a member of British Trade Missions to Egypt, the Sudan and Ethiopia, Yugoslavia, and South East Asia. Among his other public positions, he was chief executive of the British Compressed Air Society, the British Valve Manufacturers' Association, and the Nuclear Energy Trade Associations' Conference, and was a member of many important industrial and governmental committees.
Mr Berry was elected a Member of the Institution in 1945. He was also a Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.
