Col. ARTHUR GEORGE GADD. R.E., was born in 1899 and educated at Hitchin and Wolverhampton Grammar Schools, After passing out from the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, in 1919 he entered the School of Military Engineering and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1921.
From 1924 to 1926 he took electrical and mechanical courses as an apprentice with Blackstone and Company, Ltd., and other firms, after which he was appointed assistant instructor in the workshops of the School of Military Engineering.
Five years later he was posted abroad on his appointment as electrical and mechanical officer at Gibraltar, a position which involved the charge of searchlight defences and the preparation of schemes for new work.
Appointments then followed as garrison engineer at Gibraltar and assistant inspector of engineering and signal stores at Woolwich, with promotion to the rank of captain in 1937 and major in the following year.
The outbreak of war in 1939 found him attached to the Ministry of Supply, where he held the position of deputy chief inspector in the engineering and signal stores, Woolwich, with the temporary rank of lieutenant-colonel. He attained the rank of colonel in 1946.
Col. Gadd was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1938 and transferred to Membership four years later.
His death occurred on 1st March 1952.
