"ARCHIBALD CHARLES MITCHELL, who was born in New Zealand in 1874, spent the whole of his career there. He received his technical education in Invercargill and served a seven-year apprenticeship in that town with J. Johnston and Sons, general engineers; after which he found employment as journeyman, turner, and foreman with A. and T. Burt, Ltd., Dunedin. In 1902 he was appointed works manager to Cooper and Duncan, Ltd., Christchurch, and became assistant general manager six years later. He vacated this appointment in 1909 and joined the staff of James J. Niven and Co|James J. Niven and Company, Ltd., Napier. After acting as works manager with the charge of eight branches, he was appointed superintendent engineer for New Zealand for the company. He retired in 1936, but his services were retained as technical adviser and consultant by the firms with which he had formerly been connected. He was also in private practice as a consulting engineer and assessor. Mr. Mitchell was elected a Member of the Institution in 1914. His death occurred in June 1950."
