At this time, James Webster appears to have been the only English manufacturer of aluminium
1877 Opened a refinery at Shirley
1881 Webster set up the Aluminium Crown Metal Co. in Solihull
1885 Reorganised as the Webster Patent Aluminium Crown Metal Co., to work certain subsidiary improvements to the Deville process he had patented.
Webster then became interested in Hamilton Castner's new process for refining aluminium.
1887 The Aluminium Co. Ltd was founded, with capital of £400,000, to exploit Castner's invention and take over the business of the Crown Metal Co., with Castner as managing director.
