Major ALFRED SHERWOOD, R.E.M.E., was born in 1891 and served his apprenticeship in the shops and drawing office of the Hunslet Engineering Company, Leeds, from 1910 to 1914. In the following year he joined the Royal Navy and served as E.R.A.; later he was chief E.R.A. in H.M. Submarine E.9.
From 1920 to 1922 he was employed as installation engineer for the National Fuel Oil Company, London, and during the next three years he was with Messrs. Holm and Company, Ltd. He was placed in sole charge of building developments on behalf of the firm, who retained his services for a further period of four years as superintending engineer at their Kingsnorth Mills, Rochester, where he was responsible for the erection of buildings and plant.
He then went to West Africa as chief mechanical engineer of the Bibiani gold mine. On relinquishing that appointment in 1934, he returned to England and, entering into business on his own account, practised as an inspecting engineer surveyor, and assessor. In 1940 he was gazetted to the R.A.O.C. with the rank of lieutenant and two years later was promoted to the rank of major, being O.C. Eastern Command Workshops, Thetford. Shortly after his transference in the same year to the R.E.M.E., he was placed in retirement on account of ill health.
Major Sherwood, whose death occurred on 11th May 1943, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1927, and was transferred to Membership in 1942.
