Alfred Herbert Wilde (1889-1930)

Alfred Herbert Wilde was born in 1889 and studied at Manchester University, where he obtained an Associateship and Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
After serving his apprenticeship with the National Gas Engine Co, he became Leading Draughtsman with the Humphrey Pump Co, and was subsequently in the Gun Carriage Inspection Department at Woolwich Arsenal.
During the latter part of the war period he was in charge of the Engine Design Office of the Aircraft Manufacturing Co (Airco), developing his own patents.
He then joined the Hotchkiss company (subsequently Morris Engines) as Chief Designer and in 1927 was appointed Chief Engineer of Standard Motor Co.
He died in December, 1930, at the age of 41.
He was elected a Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1923.
