ALFRED GEORGE SPENCER was born in London on 16th May 1851, and was early associated with his father in the technical development of shock-absorbing devices for railroad rolling-stock.
The first patent was taken out in 1886, and since that time he devoted himself entirely to research on this question with so much success that nearly all the Railways in Great Britain, the Argentine, India, China, Japan, and South Africa have adopted his ideas in some form upon their rolling stock.
He was a Managing Director of George Spencer, Moulton and Co., Ltd., and became a Member of this Institution in 1878.
