"ALEXANDER MOODY-STUART, who was born in 1870, received his general education at Moffatt Academy and at Edinburgh University. His technical training was obtained at Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh, and at Andersonian College, Glasgow.
He began to serve a five years' apprenticeship with Messrs. D. Stewart and Company, Ltd., of Glasgow, in 1889, but shortly before its expiry he went to Demerara to take up a three years' engagement as assistant engineer on a sugar estate.
He returned to Messrs. Stewart and Company in 1897 and was employed as a draughtsman, but a year later he began a connection with Messrs. Pott, Cassels, and Williamson, Ltd., engineers, of Motherwell, which lasted for nineteen years.
During this period he successively occupied the positions of draughtsman, chief draughtsman, and finally works manager. From 1921 to 1925 he was with Messrs. Harveys, Ltd., makers of sugar machinery, of Glasgow, as their foreign representative. He then joined Messrs. Blair Campbell and McLean, Ltd. (now Messrs. Blair, Ltd.), of Glasgow, for whom he was engaged on the design of sugar machinery and also in travelling abroad on behalf of the firm. These joint appointments he held until his retirement in 1929. Mr. Moody-Smart, whose death occurred on 14th December 1946, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1906 and was transferred to Membership in 1911."
