ALBERT EDWARD SHINER was an Associate Member of the Institution for forty-one years, having been elected in 1903. He was born in 1871 and received his education at the Islington School of Arts and at Birkbeck College. On the termination of a seven years' apprenticeship with Mr. John Esson, printing machinist, of London, he continued in the latter's employment as a journeyman. Subsequently he was made machine draughtsman and outdoor foreman, and finally foreman of works, in which capacity he reorganized the company and assumed full responsibility for the management of the business.
About 1900 he established a general engineering works in Clerkenwell, which he continued to direct until about 1920, when he disposed of his business and settled down to farm Inworth Grange, Tiptree, Essex. After ten years, however, he longed to return to engineering and in 1930 he came back to London and built a new engineering works in Clerkenwell. In spite of his ten years' absence, he quickly collected together his old connection, and continued to direct this business until his death, which occurred on 13th September 1944.
During the war of 1939-45 his firm was closely concerned with the production of munitions.
