1959 AEI acquired the group of 4 companies London Electric Wire Co and Smiths, Frederick Smith and Co, Liverpool Electric Cable Co, Vactite Wire Co.

1960 AEI reorganised its 3 main subsidiaries into divisions[1], one of which specialized in cables but this suffered from stiff competition right from the start. The number of production sites was reduced from 6 to 4, namely Woolwich, Gravesend, Birtley and Lydbrook.

1970 Submarine Cables Ltd was sold to Standard Telephones and Cables Ltd.
