TALBOT, Ernest, M.I.MECH.E. Consulting and Experimental Engineer. Born 28th April, 1879 at Norton Woodseats, Sheffield. Educated at Wesley College, Sheffield University. Commenced engineering career with J. F. Bennet working with various firms as designer, etc. until going to NewYork as Consulting Engineer in I910.—While there invented Zephyr Piston. Returned to, England 1911 and became Joint Managing Director of James Talbot & Davison Ltd., Lowestoft and was jointly responsible for the design of the Zephyr Car. In 1922 founded Zephyr Pistons Ltd. In 1934 became Director and Production Manager, Brooke Marine Ltd. Became proprietor of Consulting Engineer business in 1941. TAMS, Bertram Jacob, M.SC., M.I.MECH.E., M.S.A.E. General Manager, Brockhouse Engineering. (Southport) Ltd. Born Stoke-on-Trent, 23rd May, 1904. Educated at Stoke Primary School. Apprenticed as Electrician, but saw future in Motor Industry and in partnership with late brother, founded firm in 1912. Employed by Vulcan Co. Ltd., at Southport during 1914-18 war. TEAGE, Henry Dixon. Technical Editor, The Motor Cycle " (retd.). Born Oporto, Portugal, 7th June, 1886. Educated at Rugby. Served apprenticeship with Maudslay Motor Co., Coventry. Later transferred to Motor Cycle work and served with the Premier Cycle Co. and Hobart Bird, on experimental test work. Joined staff of " The Motor Cycle " in 1911, and retired in 1942. Served in Royal Flying Corps and R.A.F. in 1914 war, and in Home Guard in 1939-45 war. Has handled most forms of road vehicles since 1904 and at one time owned first four-cylinder Panhard imported into country. Handled motor boats for Maudslay Co. in 1907; now has one of own. Studied engineering at Liverpool University. Went as Student Apprentice in 1934 to Leyland Motors, Ltd. and was Technical Assistant until joining Army in 1940. Mentioned in Despatches. Released with rank of Major. Returned to Leyland Motors, holding appointment as Field Engineer until 1948, then joined present concern as Assistant Engineer, and took up present position in 1949. THATCHER, Arthur John. Director, Secretary, Joint Manager, The New Mendip Engineering Co. Ltd., Atworth, nr. Melksham, Wilts. Born London, 10th September, 1891. Educated at Hurlingham High School. Studied engineering at Chelsea Polytechnic, Luton Modern School, and Battersea Polytechnic. After engineering pupilship, entered Aircraft Industry in 1912 on design, with Hewlett and Blondeau, later alternating between automobile and aeronautical design with several firms. In 1917 went as Works Superintendent to Mendip Motor and Engineering Co. At end of war work was directed to manufacture of Mendip Light Car. Works sold on death of owner in 1921 and closed. Present concern started in 1922 by brother, Mr. George Thatcher. After appointments with Lagonda Motors, Ltd., John I. Thornycroft Ltd., Bristol Aeroplane Co. and Rotol Airscrews Ltd., joined present concern (which has since become incorporated as Limited company and subsidiary of Dowty Equipment Ltd., Cheltenham) in 1940. THOMAS, Sir Miles, D.F.C., M.I.MECH.E. Chairman, British Overseas Airways Corporation. Born North Wales, 2nd March, 1897. Educated at Bromsgrove School. Engineering premium pupil at Bellis & Morcom Ltd., Birmingham. Served 1914-18 in Armoured Car Squadron and R.F.C. After demobilisation wrote on technical subjects. Became connected with Motor Industry in 1924 as Adviser on Sales Promotion to Lord Nuffield (then Mr. W. R. Morris).
