Railway break. On each side of the carriage are suspended two friction slides, formed of stout iron bars with flanges on the inner side; they are attached to the under body of the carriage by strong iron supports, or slings, and are kept off the rail by a chain. When required to be brought into action, the chain is loosened, and the friction slide touches the rail. The impetus of the carriage is sufficient to bring the supports into a vertical position, and to lift the wheels off the rail, leaving the weight of the carriage on the friction slide, which thus forms a sledge.
