. . . At the age of twenty-six he succeeded his father in the old established bank-note paper business . . . chairmanship of the London and South Western Railway. His connection with the directorate of this company began in 1861. He was made deputy-chairman in 1875, and chairman in 1892. He resigned the chairmanship in 1899; but retained his seat on the board for some three years afterwards, finally resigning in October, 1902. He was also chairman of the Board of Directors of the Waterloo and City Railway from 1894 to 1901. . . .
