Gussstahl-Werk Witten of Germany was founded in 1853/54 by by Carl Ludwig Berger (1794–1871) of Etablissement Berger & Co. (who had developed a production process for high-quality cast steel) and Jan Jacob van Braam (1805–1884) and Gerrit Vriese (or Cornelius Jacob Arnoldus den Tex), of the Netherlands.
