"WILLIAM YOUNG FREW served his apprenticeship with Messrs. James Brown and Company, Ltd., paper makers, of Penicuik, Midlothian, from 1904 to 1909, and concurrently attended classes at the Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, for his technical instruction. After some experience as a fitter with Messrs. Hawthorns and Company, Ltd., of Leith, he served as a marine engineer in vessels owned by Messrs. William Thomson and Company, of Leith, from 1910 to 1914, and during this period obtained a first-class Board of Trade Certificate. He was then employed in a similar capacity by the Royal Mail Steamship Packet Company, Ltd., for the next five years and rose from fifth to second engineer. After holding the position of chief engineer to Messrs. Wiggins Teape and Company, paper makers, Hele, Devonshire, he returned, in 1924, to Messrs. James Brown as assistant to the chief engineer. He was promoted to be chief engineer three years later and retained this appointment until his death, which occurred on 9th January 1949, in his fifty-ninth year. Mr. Frew had been an Associate Member of the Institution since 1927."
