Apprenticed in the works of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway

c.1852 Then worked for the railway as inside foreman for 7 years, outside locomotive foreman for 7 years; then was inside locomotive superintendent for 14 years, in which time he designed and built a considerable number of locomotives.

1880 He was engineering superintendent of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, Miles Platting, when he became a member of the Inst of Mech Engineers

1887 resigned from I Mech E
