WILLIAM TOWNHILL was born at Bardney, Lincolnshire, on 24th September 1848.
After serving a six years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Ruston and Proctor, Ltd., Lincoln, he remained with the firm for a short period, and then, in 1871, was engaged in the fitting department of Earle's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Hull. Five years later he became leading hand, and outside foreman in 1882 until 1889, when he entered the office of Mr. Carson, consulting engineer, Hull.
In 1896 he was engaged as assistant manager in the engineering department of Messrs. Cooper and Co., Hull, and in 1905 he commenced in practice on his own account as consulting engineer and marine surveyor, subsequently admitting Mr. Hepton into partnership.
His death took place in Hull on 11th September 1917, in his sixty-ninth year.
He became a Member of this Institution in 1912.
