William T. Bate

of W. T. Bate & Son, Conshohoken, Pa., USA

The son of a blacksmith and boilermaker, he learned his trade with an eminent engineering firm in Cornwall, from where he emigrated to the USA in 1847. He worked as a boilermnaker in various shops in New Jersey, Connecticut and Maryland. In 1856 he took charge of the shops of the Norris Company at Norristown, Pa., where he remained until the firm closed. He was for a time superintendent of the Warren Foundry, Phillipsburg, NJ. In 1865 he established the boilermaking firm of W T Bate & Son. He died on 10 February 1904, aged 85.
