1916 Obituary [1]

Many people in Pyrford and neighbourhood will mourn the death of Mr. William McLaren, which occurred at his residence. Blackdown, Friday last week, at the age of 62 years. Deceased had been in poor health for some time past, but the end came quite suddenly. On the previous Wednesday he attended business as usual, and during Thursday his condition gave cause for alarm, but after retiring was taken ill, and at 4:30 a.m. he passed away. With the widow and two daughters — one of whom is married - much sympathy will be felt by their sad bereavement.

The family came to reside at Blackdown, which was built for their occupation, some 16 years ago, and have achieved widespread popularity for their kindliness and generosity. For do deserving object has their assistance been invoked in vain, and with local interests they have identified themselves in many ways.

Up to the time of his death. Mr. McLaren was member of Pyrford Council, though indisposition had prevented his attending the last two meetings. He was great supporter of the local Football Club, and had arranged matches between it and a team of his own employes. To various other institutions in Pyrford, Byfleet, Woking, and elsewhere he also extended generous help, and by his demise many folk both ends of the social scale have lost a good friend.

The deceased's business interests wore considerable. One of the original partners of G. D. Peters and Co., of Moorfields. E.C., he became chairman of the limited liability company, into which it was converted, and held that position up the time of his death. He was also chairman of the Patent Impermeable Millboard Company, of Sunbury. and of the Superheater Corporation, Ltd., of 9. Palace Chambers. The firm of G. D. Peters and Co., Ltd., have important works at Slough.

The funeral took place at Brookwood Cemetery yesterday (Tuesday) afternoon, after cremation of the remains St. John’s. There was a large attendance mourners, and wealth of magnificent wreaths.
