"WILLIAM MATTHEW SCHUTTE, M.B.E., who was born in 1878, received his technical education at the Wolverhampton Technical College and served his apprenticeship from 1890 to 1900 with Messrs. M. Schutte and Son, general engineers, Penkridge, Staffs, and with Messrs. Joseph Evans and Son, of Wolverhampton. On the conclusion of his practical training he rejoined Messrs. Schutte and Son as works assistant manager and held this post for four years. After acting as assistant mechanical engineer to the Littleton Collieries Co, Cannock Chase, and as works manager and consulting engineer for Mr. F. H. Burgess, agricultural and general engineer, of Stafford, he went to India in 1912 to take up an appointment as agricultural and mechanical engineer (first class), to the Government of Bombay, in whose service he continued until his retirement some twenty years later. During the war of 1914-18 he was deputy controller of Mesopotamia requirements (Eng.). Mr. Schutte was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1917. His death occurred at Worthing on 27th August 1948."
