"WILLIAM MATHISON DODDS was born in 1884 and received his education at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. His apprenticeship was served at the engineering works of the Scottish Freestone Quarry Company, Ltd., and with the Mirrlees Watson Company, Ltd., of Glasgow. After a short period of service with the Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Ltd., he proceeded to the Malay States in 1906, having been appointed on the staff of the Penang Sugar Estates Company, Ltd., and the Straits Sugar Company, Ltd. (now the Rubber Estates and Allied Companies).
In 1914 he became resident engineer for a group of estates in Lower Perak, and three years later was appointed superintendent engineer for both concerns and their associated companies, with responsibility for the engineering side of twenty-two estates. He relinquished this position in 1926, on his appointment as consulting engineer to the above companies in this country. In 1938 he was appointed engineer representative in Scotland for the Grip Steel Bar Company, Ltd., with whom he remained until 1941, when he became attached to the Ministry of Supply as inspecting officer in the armaments department. Mr. Dodd, whose death occurred on 27th February 1947, was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1911 and was transferred to Membership in 1917."
