1901 Northcott wrote to various engineering-related bodies, to invite their suggestions on ways of reconciling the interests of the employer and the employed. The bodies consulted included the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the Institution of Junior Engineers, the Institution of Foremen Engineers and Draughstmen and the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, the men's trades union. The I Mech E and the AES declined but the other 2 bodies agreed to provide suggestions.
