1886 William Garforth began experiments on coal dust explosions in mines in the Altofts Colliery
1906 The Royal Commission on Mines provided an experimental gallery at Altofts Colliery; Garforth was put in charge of the researches.
1907 President, Mining Association of Great Britain
1911 Awarded a gold medal by the Royal Society of Arts for his efforts to encourage adoption of rescue apparatus in mines and for the improvements he made therein[1]
1911-13 president of the Institution of Mining Engineers
