Sir William Edward Garforth (c1845-1921), mining engineer

c.1845 Born son of William Garforth,

1886 William Garforth began experiments on coal dust explosions in mines in the Altofts Colliery

1906 The Royal Commission on Mines provided an experimental gallery at Altofts Colliery; Garforth was put in charge of the researches.

1907 President, Mining Association of Great Britain

1911 Awarded a gold medal by the Royal Society of Arts for his efforts to encourage adoption of rescue apparatus in mines and for the improvements he made therein[1]

1911-13 president of the Institution of Mining Engineers

1916 Sir William Garforth was president of the Institution of Mining Engineers
