1936 Died. 'The death has occurred at Dumfries of a well-known South of Scotland manufacturer, Mr William Charteries, of the firm of Charteries, Spence and Co of the Rosefield Tweed Mills. Mr Charteries who was 63 years of age, had been ill for a considerable time. His firm are one of the largest employers of labour in Dumfries, and at one time seven or eight hundred men were engaged.'[1]
