1843 William Butler, J.P., became manager of a new tar distillery in Crews Hole, which produced creosote for railway sleeper's on Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway.[1]

1937 Willian Butler and Co. acquired Francis F. Fox and Co.[2]
