WILLIAM ALFRED WARD served his apprenticeship from 1896 to 1902 with Messrs. Morison Ingram and Company and Messrs. Frank Pearn and Company. He was appointed draughtsman to the Lanchester Engine Company in 1902 and after serving in a similar capacity with Messrs. Bennis and Company he joined Messrs. Simon Carves, of Manchester in 1905, becoming general contructional manager of the chemical plant department. Mr. Ward remained with the firm until 1919.

He was appointed general manager of Superheater Units, Ltd., Swansea, a position which he held until 1922, when he became engineer representative for the Northern Counties and Scotland, for the Unit Superheater and Pipe Company, being also engaged in business on his own account. In 1925 he returned to Messrs. Simon Carves, and was appointed chief engineer in the boiler department. He was responsible to the director in charge of that department for the design of boilers and auxiliaries, including those for many large contracts. He remained with the firm until the end of 1936, when he was appointed to the board of directors of Bennis Combustion, Ltd., a position which he occupied until his death, which occurred on 12th May 1939, in his fifty-ninth year.

Mr. Ward was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1921 and was transferred to Membership in 1936.
