Wilfred Briggs was born in 1883, and received his technical training at the Royal Naval Engineering Colleges at Keyham and Greenwich. He then served as Engineer Officer in the Navy and during the War was Assistant Superintendent for Engines in the Air Department of the Admiralty, in which capacity he served on the Steel Research Committee of the Institution.

After the War he held positions successively with Rolls-Royce, Ltd., and The De Lavaud Holdings Corporation, Ltd., and in 1931 joined the firm of General Motors Corporation at Detroit.

He died on 13th August, 1934, at the age of 51.

He was elected a Member of the Institution in 1917.
