White's Marine Engineering Co

From Graces Guide

1922 William Albert White founded White's Oil Burning Company

Later that company was incorporated in White's Marine Engineering Company, Ltd.

The firm established new works at Hebburn-on-Tyne

1932 Description of high speed reciprocating marine engine combined with exhaust steam turbine. Preliminary results indicated a saving of over 30% in steam consumption when the performance of the set is compared with that of a normal triple-expansion engine. The triple expansion reciprocating engine was built by the Smiths Dock Co, and designed to develop 310 i.h.p. when running at 260 r.p.m. The turbine was of the Parsons reaction type, and was supplied by R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co. It ran at 4,600 r.p.m., and was coupled to the propeller-shaft by double-reduction gearing. The turbine was supplied with steam at atmospheric pressure from the service in which an exhaust turbine is employed in engine exhaust, and developed 190 h.p., so that the total indicated horse-power developed by the set was 500 with the reciprocating engine running at 265 r.p.m.[1]

1934 The cargo steamer Adderstone received White's system of high-speed high-pressure reciprocating engines, exhausting into a low-pressure turbine which was geared to the propeller shaft.

1962 ' White's Marine Engineering Co. Ltd. and White's of Hebburn (Engineers) Ltd. have recently embarked on a large programme of expansion. General Manager is E. J. Cole.'[2]
