1871 The 'Earl of Arran' will provide a daily service between Penzance and Scilly.[1]

1872 'The total loss of the Little Western steam ship, belonging to the West Cornwall Steam-ship Company, happened on Saturday night about eight o'clock, on rocks called the Southern Wells, near Sampson Island, Scilly. She was assisting a disabled vessel with iron ore and when returning to Scilly struck and sank. The crew were saved. This is the second steam ship the company have lost within three months. She left Penzance on Saturday morning; and left Scilly for the wreck at four o'clock.'[2]
