1880s The India Rubber, Gutta Percha and Telegraph Works Co promoted the West African Telegraph Company to link French and Portuguese colonies to the Spanish National system, which had a cable terminating at St. Louis, Senegal.

Within four years (1893?) the Eastern Telegraph Co had taken control of this company and it was merged with the Africa Direct Telegraph Co.
