WALTERS NEWTON was born in 1874 near Chesterfield and commenced his working life in a small repair shop at Blackwood, Lanarkshire, where wagons belonging to local colliery companies were repaired.
When Messrs. Hurst, Nelson and Company became interested in this concern, Mr. Newton moved to Motherwell.
In 1902 he was made repair shop foreman, and in 1905 the rapid expansion of business at Chesterfield works resulted in his appointment to the post of works foreman there.
Shortly after the formation of Messrs. Wagon Repairs he was in 1919 appointed chief engineer, and he retained this position until his death on 22nd December 1930.
Mr. Newton was one of the founders of the Whittington Adult School and he was skilful in the making of models, many of which were exhibited.
He became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1924.
