WALTER SAUNDERS PATERSON served his apprenticeship from 1875 to 1878 in the drawing office and workshops of the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway, at Brighton, and remained with the company until 1882. He took charge of the fitting of the Westinghouse automatic brake to the rolling stock, and later became locomotive foreman at London Bridge. He then went to Rangoon where he was appointed chief engineer in charge of one of the mills belonging to the Bombay and Burmah Trading Corporation. He was also Government inspector of boilers and prime movers for eleven years.
In 1901 he was made chief inspecting engineer to the Egyptian Government, and among his principal duties was the inspection of rolling stock and railway material under construction. He held this position until his retirement in 1929.
Mr. Paterson, whose death occurred on 17th February 1941, at the age of 84, was on the roll of the Institution for no less than sixty-one years; he was elected a Graduate of the Institution in 1880 and was transferred to Membership in 1884. He was also an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. He served as a Volunteer in the Burma war of 1885 and was for 23 years in the Volunteer Force, receiving the Long Service Medal in 1900; he held the rank of Major in the Rangoon Artillery.
