Walter Norwich Duff was born in 1884, and was educated at Winchester College and Cambridge University, where he obtained an Honours Degree in the Mechanical Sciences Tripos.
He received his practical training with John I. Thornycroft and Co., Ltd., and was then appointed by the firm to represent them in Italy.
Appointments subsequently held included the General Management of a Shipyard and Engineering Works in Rio de Janeiro; Chief Engineer to Constantinesco Torque Converter, Ltd.; Joint Engineer to Gearless Transmission, Ltd., and Humfrey Sandberg Co.; and Director and Chief Engineer of Associated Transmissions, Ltd.
Early in 1932 he was appointed Director of Research and Standardization for the I.A.E., a post which he filled with conspicuous ability and success until his untimely death which occurred on March 18th, 1934, at the age of 49.
He was elected a Member of the Institution in June, 1932.
