1938 Obituary.[1]

Walter John Bell, elected in 1911, was one of the Foundation Members of the Institution. For 50 years he was associated with the Engineering firm of Messrs. Taite and Carlton, Ltd., of Victoria Street, London, and was the Author of several books on Locomotive Engineering, besides being Consulting Editor of “ The Locomotive.”

He wrote, in conjunction with Mr. A. C. W. Lowe, many original histories of railways and locomotives, which appeared in the pages of “ The Locomotive.” These included the Bristol and Exeter, Highland, West Lancashire, Malines-Terneuzen and many of the lesser-known lines.

He was a brother of the late Mr. A. M. Bell, for many years a Member of Council, and Mr. A. R. Bell, the proprietor of the Locomotive Publishing Co.

He died suddenly on September 18th, 1938, at his residence at Malden, at the age of 64.
