1930 'Mr. William Goold Weir, joint managing director of Messrs. David Rowan and Co., Ltd., marine engineers and boilermakers, Glasgow, has retired from that firm, with which he has been connected for over 30 years. Mr. Weir began his engineering career in a consulting engineer's office in Glasgow in 1878, and in the following year commenced his apprenticeship with Messrs. James Bowden and Co.. serving five years in shops and the drawing office. On completion of his apprenticeship he continued his technical studies for two years at the Glasgow University, and after a short sea experience became employed as a draughtsman at the Neptune Works of Messrs. Wigham Richardson and Co., Newcastle-on-Tyne. rising there to chief draughtsman, which position he occupied for eight years. In 1899 he accepted a more responsible position with Mews. Rowan, Glasgow, and following the death of the late Mr. James Rowan he was taken into partnership. When the business became a limited company he became joint managing director. Mr. Weir is a member of the Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland, a member of the Institution of Naval Architects, and is a representative of that society on the Committee of Management of the British Corporation Register of Shipping and Aircraft. He is also a member of the committee in charge of the departments of engineering in the Royal Technical College. Glasgow. He was awarded the O.B.E. in January. 1918.'[1]
