Death of Motor Car Pioneer[1]

The funeral took place at Kenilworth yesterday of Mr. W. F. Milward, general manager Coventry Victor Motor Company, and formerly well known in racing and trials circles Mr. Milward. who lived at Abbey House. Kenilworth, had been ill for about five months. He was remembered among the older generation of motorists as the designer of the Charron- Laycock car which was produced in Sheffield in days gone by.

Mr. Milward drove this marque in many trials and races From 1922 onwards secured many major awards, including 15 firsts at Kop Hill and 27 firsts at Southend. He was a consistent winner other events during succeeding years. He was often accompanied by Mrs Milward when competing at these meetings. Later Mr. Milward took charge of the Hampton Car Company Stroud, Gloucestershire. and evolved a smart high-quality light car.

In 1940 he came Coventry at the invitation of Mr. W. A. Weaver, managing director of the Coventry Victor Company, and joined the company as general manager in charge of war production.

We record with regret the death, on December 17th, of Mr. W. F. Milward, general manager of the Coventry Victor Motor Company, Ltd. He will be remembered as a pioneer motorist and as the designer of the "Charron Laycock" car. He joined the Coventry Victor Motor Company, Ltd., as general manager in 1940, and had charge of the war production programme undertaken by that company.
