The University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was a university based in the centre of the city of Manchester. It specialised in technical and scientific subjects and was a major centre for research.
It had its origins in the Manchester Mechanics Institute
1966 The Manchester College of Technology was renamed the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) but remained largely independent of the Victoria University.
1994 UMIST became a completely autonomous university with its own degree-awarding powers.
2004 On 1 October, the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) was subsumed by the Victoria University of Manchester (commonly called the University of Manchester) to form a new entity also called The University of Manchester.
