THOMAS PERRONET BARKER whose death occurred on 17th November 1944, had been managing director of Messrs. Thomas Piggott and Company, Ltd., engineers, of Birmingham, since 1910, and had been identified with that firm for almost the whole of his career.
He was born in 1868 and educated at King Edward's School, Birmingham, where he held a foundation scholarship. He then served a premium apprenticeship with Messrs. Thomas Piggott from 1883 to 1888, after which he was made erection superintendent in 1892, and he was placed in charge of the drawing and estimating offices three years later. Subsequently he was made works manager and, in 1903, was promoted to be general manager. In 1905 he accepted a similar position with Messrs. Ashmore, Benson, Pease and Company, Ltd., of Stockton-on-Tees, with whom he remained for five years, when he returned to Birmingham to take up the post of managing director of Messrs. Thomas Piggott and Company.
During his long association with the firm Mr. Barker was responsible for many important contracts and carried out work to the design of various eminent engineers of the day. He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1899 and was transferred to Membership in 1903.
