THOMAS JOSEPH NOAKES was born in London on 13th June 1845.
He was educated at local schools in Dalston,,and attended technical classes.
Afterwards he served a seven years' apprenticeship with Messrs. Frost, Noakes and Vincent, engineers and brass founders, at Spitalfields, London.
Later he became manager to Thomas Noakes and Sons, who carried on the above business.
He was responsible for many improvements in the design of machinery for lighthouses, under the jurisdiction of the Trinity House and Irish Lights Board, and his knowledge of metal alloys was frequently utilized by the Admiralty and War Office. The earlier torpedo boats of Messrs. Yarrow and Co., Ltd., contained certain fittings designed by him in collaboration with the firm, and many experiments for the Maxim gun were carried out at his works.
His death took place in London on 20th October 1917, at the age of seventy-two.
He was elected a Member of this Institution in 1886.
