Thomas Drane (1818-1890) of Ceylon Railway Company

1818 Born at Tower Hamlets, the son of Thomas Drane, a Brewer.

1836 entered Caius College, Cambridge University, then moved to Peterhouse[1]; mathematic honours degree.

Pupil at Walker and Burges; then worked for them at Bridlington Harbour.

Resident engineer on the Furness Railway

Spent 2 years in Ceylon

1849 Appointed Professor at Queen's College, Ireland, Thomas Drane, of St. Peter’s College, Cambridge, formerly engineer to the Ceylon Railway Company.

1850 Marriage at Wanesbeck, Denmark. Thomas Drane, jun., Esq., civil engineer, to Louisa Nutbeam, widow of the late Benjamin Harding, Esq., of Wadhurst, Sussex.[2]

1852 Resident engineer at London Bridge for the South Eastern Railway when he became a member of Inst Civil Engineers.

1861 Living at Gresham Villas, Cockermouth: Thomas Drane (age 43 born London), Civil Engineer. With his wife Louisa and two step-daughters and one daughter.[3]

1871 Living at Cockermouth: Thomas Drane (age 52 born Bromley), Civil Engineer. With his wife, daughter and grand-daughter.<1871 Census</ref>
