Thomas Bain was born in 1888, and received his technical education at New Zealand University following Matriculation in 1904.

He was apprenticed with Andersons, Lyttelton, and subsequently remained with the firm as Leading Hand.

In 1921 he was appointed Assistant Workshop Superintendent of Christchurch Tramways Board, and in 1928 became Works Manager, which position he held up to the time of his death in November, 1939, at the age of 51.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution of Automobile Engineers in 1938.
