A tunnel was constructed between Gravesend and Rochester

1844 a line of rails was laid on a timber viaduct, partially covering the canal through the tunnel

1846 The Higham and Strood Tunnel was acquired by the South Eastern Railway, the channel was filled in, and appropriated for use solely by the railway.
