SYDNEY WILLIS GOOSEY was the managing proprietor of St. George's Ironworks, in South London, and had been the head of the firm for thirty-four years. In the course of his long career as a master blacksmith and ironworker, he accumulated a considerable amount of metallurgical knowledge, and he subsequently enlarged the scope of his business to include structural steelwork.

He was born in 1880, and after leaving school he continued his education in mechanical engineering at Finsbury Technical College. He served his apprenticeship from 1896 to 1899 with Messrs. Thomas Middleton and Company, Ltd., in Southwark. He was draughtsman to Messrs. Callenders Cable and Construction Company, Ltd., from 1900 until 1901, when he became managing draughtsman, and later manager to Mr. Joseph Stone at St. George's Ironworks.

Mr. Goosey purchased this business in 1906 and continued as its managing proprietor until his death, which occurred on 23rd December 1940. He undertook a number of contracts for the Home Office and the London County Council. In addition he was a director of Phillips Commutator Grinder Company, Ltd. Mr. Goosey was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1913.
