SYDNEY HENRY WOOD, whose death occurred in his eighty-first year on 8th February 1943, was for forty-one years in the service of the Gas Light and Coke Company, which he joined in 1891 as mechanical engineer at their Beckton works, where he was in charge of the entire plant. In addition he was responsible for the maintenance of the private railway system of the Company.
In 1918 he was transferred to the head office in Westminster as mechanical assistant to the chief engineer, with responsibility for the supervision of all the company's stations. During the war of 1914-18 he held the appointment of manager of the Outer Eastern District of London under the Ministry of Munitions. Mr. Wood retired in 1932. He had been a Member of the Institution since 1898.
