Summer Lane Electricity Generating Station, Birmingham.

c1903 A station of Birmingham Corporation, set up to provide current to the expanding tramway network.

1903 The city recruited Richard Alexander Chattock as electrical engineer

1904 the Corporation owned two generating stations supplying low-tension direct current for lighting and private power purposes. The network was chiefly in the centre of the city. A high tension supply was needed to extend the network so the necessary plant would be installed in the Summer Lane station. The new works were undertaken by the Birmingham City Council, in connection with their tramways system and for lighting purposes.

1906 Further construction started

1906 Opening ceremony. Generating plant: Four Belliss and Morcom engines driving Dick, Kerr and Co DC generators, two large AC machines and three smaller ones. [1]

1913 Building completed
