Stourport Electric Power Station




1923 Construction of the power station started for the Shropshire, Worcestershire and Staffordshire Electric Power Co; planned capacity was 12-15 MW.

1927 Description of station and its plant [2]. Equipped with two 18,000 kw. 25 Hz turbine-alternators and one 750 kw. DC house set. Manufactured by the British Thomson-Houston Co., the turbines were of the main sets are of the single cylinder two 22,500-kva. 25 Hz turbine-alternators and one 750-kw. direct current set for auxiliary purposes. Four Stirling water-tube boilers and superheaters, combined with Babock and Wilcox economisers. Steam conditions 350 psi, 680 deg. F. Normally, the boilers were fired by two Babcock and Wilcox forced-draught component-type chain-grate stokers, but auxiliary oil-burning equipment was also available. Condensers by Cole, Marchent and Morley. The circulating pumps were manufactured by Mather and Platt. One of the pumps was driven by a 138 h.p. variable speed DC motor. The other pump was driven by a 138 h.p. steam turbine running at 6,000 r.p.m., and geared down to pump speed through gearing supplied by the Power Plant Co. Each of the pumps was capable of delivering 60 per cent, of the total water required. The house generating set was driven by a turbine running at 6,000 r.p.m., and geared to a 750-kw. generator running at 600 rpm, supplying current at 460 volts.[3]

1954 when commissioned the station's English Electric turbines had the most advanced steam conditions of any turbine in the UK's public supply system, at 1500 psi, 1050°F.
